Tupelo Film Fest – Sun, Music, Movies

May 13, 2011

With live music and very tasty Latin food (including the best fried plantains pretty much ever) Tupelo Film Fest kicked off its 8th annual outside the Lyric Theater on Thursday night. Movies started earlier this year with pre-fest screenings on Wednesday evening and then films beginning at noon on Thursday.

The kick off ceremony began at 6:30 p.m. and brought out a fairly healthy-sized crowd to enjoy the festivities. Organizer Pat Rasberry led a moment of silence to those who had lost so much with the recent tornadoes in the area and encouraged people to find a way to keep going and enjoy the festival as a way to remember happiness.

Filmmakers mingled with filmgoers in a relaxed setting before music videos played with Astrocasket’s “976-Evil” taking home the audience award. Daniel Lee, filmmaker, is also in the band Astrocasket which will perform tonight at the festival.

The night closed with a screening of “Wasteland” and an after party. Not sure how it worked out as this girl was already tucked away safe in bed by then though as she had to be at work bright and early.

But I plan on heading right back out there this afternoon and staying late, although I have yet to make plans on whether I am staying or not for the night. But I always end up having so much fun at this festival that I just can’t stay away.

What is great about the Tupelo Film Festival is the people. They are genuine and love movies. The people from town are just a sheer delight to sit and talk with outside the theater and the organizers are passionate about making sure filmmakers are happy.

Tonight should be more of the same with screenings kicking off at noon until 9:30 p.m. at the Lyric. Horror films at the Goodlett Manor beginning at 8:30 p.m. with live music after. Join us!

Benjamin Busch’s short film “Bright” stole the show! Check out the trailer on youtube, or the page on IMDB:

Also, one of it’s stars Glynn Turman just starred in Spielberg’s Super 8!
