Moving Beyond Prejudice: Prom Night in Mississippi

Sponsored by the University of Mississippi Lecture Series, the University Libraries, the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College, the Black History Month Committee, the School of Education, the School of Journalism and New Media, the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, the Departments of African-American Studies and Sociology/Anthropology, and the Oxford Film Festival.

Filmmakers Paul Saltzman and Patricia Aquino present a special screening of their award-winning film, PROM NIGHT IN MISSISSIPPI, to be followed by a conversation about issues of race that still exist, and the prejudices that everyone has.

The film, a documentary about the 2008 prom at Charleston High School which was funded by Academy Award winning actor Morgan Freeman when the students agreed to integrate their event, premiered at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, won the audience award at the Oxford Film Festival, and had its television premiere on HBO.
