January 27, 2011

OXFORD TOWN — With a mixture of blues and movies, the Clarksdale Film Festival kicks off its inaugural event this weekend with much of the action taking place at the Delta Cinemas and other venues around town.

Among the highlights are popular films such as “The Blind Side” about Michael Oher and his adoptive family and “Prom Night in Mississippi” which had its state premiere at the Oxford Film Festival in 2008. Two other feature documentaries to look forward to are “Full Moon Lightnin,” about blues musicians Joel Poluck and Floyd Lee and “M for Mississippi: A Road Trip through the Birthplace of the Blues.”

Another highlight will be Oxford filmmaker Joe York’s short documentary “Smokes and Ears,” presented by Scott Barretta. The film will later play the Oxford FIlm Festival in February.

Other highlights include a documentary on Bobby Rush with a Q&A with the artist after the film and “Shawshank Redemption” screened at Madidi’s, the restaurant of the star of the film, Morgan Freeman, as well as “Driving Miss Daisy.”

Daniel Morrow, founder of Music in the Hall, will present a special encore series featuring Shannon McNally, Cary Hudson, South Memphis String Band, Kenny Brown, Amy LaVere, Jimbo Mathus’ Mosquitoville and others.

With days full of movies and good food, the festival will present blues each night, making for a lively weekend. The festival is $5 per day or $10 for a weekend pass and begins today and lasts through Sunday. Tickets are on sale at the Cat Head Store at 252 Delta Ave. or at the Delta Cinemas.
