Screenwriting workshop in Tupelo

October 5, 2010

The Tupelo Film Commission is offering a screen writing workshop in Tupelo on October 16-17. I highly recommend you attend if you have ever thought of writing a screenplay, are in the middle of writing a screenplay, recently completed a screenplay, or are even moving towards a second or third screenplay.

Saturday/Sunday
9:00am to 12:15pm (includes 10 minute break)
12:15 to 1:30pm lunch
1:30pm to 4:45pm (includes 10 minute break)

DAY ONE:

While most writers already know that the three-act structure is the basic foundation of most movies, Kathie will use selected film clips to capture the most important storytelling points to visually analyze the structure that helped to make two classic movies so successful. The following topics will be presented in Day One:

  • Structure (lecture & selected film clips from classic movies)
  • Story through Character (lecture)
  • Character through Dialogue (lecture & written exercise)
  • Importance of Genres, Ratings (lecture)
  • Developing an attention-getting Logline (lecture & written exercise)
  • Utilizing 15 Pitching Pointers for a verbal pitch (lecture)

By the end of Day One, each writer will come away with a professionally-crafted logline of their project, as well as helpful handouts. Kathie will conduct a Q & A at the end of the day.

DAY TWO:

The morning session will focus on the “business” side of screenwriting and will cover the following subjects:

  • Creating a One-Page Pitch-on-Paper (lecture)
  • Crafting a Selling Synopsis (lecture)
  • “Spec” Script vs. Shooting Script (lecture)
  • Is my script ready to market? (lecture)
  • Providing Opportunities For Yourself (lecture)

Kathie will devote three hours to meeting individually with writers for 10 minutes each (depending on number of writers) listening to pitches, giving suggestions/feedback and answering individual questions.
