Oscar campaign for Kristen Stewart?

October 22, 2009

A few days ago the producers of The Cake Eaters posted on the film blog that they are considering an Oscar campaign for Kristen Stewart’s performance in the film. Within hours, several hundred supporters voted yes. Days later, almost 5,000 have agreed that they should move forward. 155 have voted against the idea.

Stewart plays Georgia, a young girl with Friedreich’s ataxia, a genetic disease that causes progressive damage to the nervous system resulting in clumsy movements, speech problems heading to heart disease and her attempts to experience what life she can before it is too late.

I have long said her performance in this film showed much more of a range than any of her more popular films, “Twilight,” “Adventureland.”The film played at Oxford Film Festival in 2007 as well as quite a few other fests before gaining some new traction with a theatrical and DVD release this year after Stewart’s popularity grew overnight with “Twilight.”

But does it deserve an Oscar? Despite the performance, would her chances be squashed by Twilight backlash from people who would not want to see her critically succeed when in such fanfare? What are your thoughts?

You can vote to decide whether the Bartok’s should launch an Oscar nomination campaign at the blog.
