Tomorrow get some of The Help

February 15, 2009

Kathryn Stockett is only at the early stages of her book tour, her first novel “The Help” having been released on Feb. 10 and already there is a lot of buzz surrounding the book.

While I don’t usually mention novels on my film blog, I am making an exception for a couple of reasons on this one:

1. It’s a damn good book.

2. She is going to be reading in Oxford tomorrow.

Talk, Q&A and Signing featuring a special appearance by actress Octavia Spencer, who will be reading the part of Minny.

3. The book is already under consideration for an adaptation by some Mississippi native filmmakers and I for one am super excited to see this novel come to the big screen.

4. Octavia Spencer

Now, if you are not familiar with Octavia Spencer, then you are blind. The woman already has 72 acting credits to her name, beginning with A Time To Kill and she has five roles in post-production right now. You’v recently seen her in Tate Taylor’s Pretty Ugly People or as the driver’s test assistant on “The Big Bang Theory.” She’s had roles on quite a few TV shows and some background roles on some bigger movies like Never Been Kissed or Being John Malkovich. However, by far the most delightful role she has had is Laqueta Mills in “The Chicken Party.” If you somehow missed this at the Oxford Film Festival a few years back, I feel sorry for you.

While I can’t seem to find it on-line right now (help me out Tate or Brunson?), you can see Octavia in this Silence of the Lambs spoof:
