September 22, 2006 Release: The Science of Sleep

September 22, 2008

Michel Gondry followed up the well liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with The Science of Sleep. Critics responded negatively, stating that the film lacked the humanity of Eternal Sunshine.

Yet, I liked it better.

Where Kaufmann’s neuroses are so releveant in the script of Eternal, Gondry on his own brings something less bitter to the table, a childlike innocence in the main character, Stephane (Gael Garcia Bernal).

Charlette Gainsbourg plays Stephanie (you may recognize her later role of Claire in I’m Not There and later in her role in the 2009 Antichrist).

Bernal is unhappy in his boring work that does not quite measure up to his creative capability, so he daydreams in fantastic ways. What is lovely about Gondry’s work is the level of playfulness. If his films have any message at all, and not that he intended to do so, it is that there can be so much more to the world than what others see, all we need is imagination.

just saw it from netflix. OH for a theater!
i loved it. rich in cheap (authentic for most of us) art. rico en sentiment.
so imaginative it blew the liner stock of many who know and love film clean out of the cellophane.
but for those who yearn to mix unencumbered imagination with the mundane to create transmographicational art, roll it. a great, sweet, film.

I loved this movie. Watched it at the movie theater that now sits dormant near the Conference Center.
