March 1 Release, 2002, 40 Days and 40 Nights **

March 1, 2008

Starring Josh Hartnett, 40 Days and 40 Nights begins on the weak premise that a guy can’t survive an entire 40 days without sex. Hmm. However, with little expectation of this being even slightly amusing, I rather enjoyed this romantic comedy, primarily because Shannyn Sossaman (star of the 2007 film Wristcutters: A Love Story) is a quirky likeable character that you don’t abhor watching. Hartnett’s character has a bad breakup and decides that for Lent he will give up sex, masturbation, even kissing. Cue girl of his dreams at the local laundromat. The complications, while vaguely funny, are a flimsy premise for major conflict. Still the film opened at the #2 spot and grossed roughly 94 million. So, I guess some people really liked it.
